ROCK PAINTING TUTORIAL #16 - "Beautiful Peacock"

Hello, and thank you for your interest in this rock painting tutorial.  I hope you will find it fun and informative.

To make the rock pictured above I used a picture of a peacock with definitive lines that I found on PINTEREST.  I then simply traced the picture onto a rock and added color with paint markers.

I purchased the rock used in this painting at a stone center near my home.  Most towns have a stone center nearby. 

A stone center is a great place to find rocks of all shapes and sizes because they usually have a pile of rocks that are broken which they will usually sell to the public at a discounted rate.  For instance, I just picked up 8 rocks at my local stone center (pictured below) for about $20.  

If you would like to find a stone center near you, then you can read this article to learn all about where to purchase rocks to paint on.   As a tip, wear gloves, long pants and closed toed shoes so you don't hurt yourself as you go through the rock piles in your search.

You can purchase rocks that are ready to be painted on Amazon now.  The rocks you can purchase online are smaller than the ones you can find in a stone center, however they have many sizes available in the smaller variety.  Click the link under the picture below to learn more...

Before we begin, you will need an image to trace onto your rock, so please read the following article linked below to learn how to get an image for your rock painting...

Learn How to Find Pictures on Your Computer, Resize and Print from a Word Processing Document

Read the article in the link above to find an image like the one I used for this peacock rock painting tutorial...

Please note that the image is printed in the same direction as it will be used face up during the tracing process.  Again, all of this is explained in the article linked above about how to get images to use.   Here is another link to that article for your convenience.

After you have your image and gathered some supplies, we're ready to begin!

You will need some kind of

carbon paper (shown above) to 

place between the rock

 and the image to be traced.

DIRECTIONS

1.  Paint your rock with two coats of white acrylic paint.  Let it dry thoroughly.

2.  Following the instructions on the package, place the transfer paper on the surface of your rock (after it has been painted and dried with the white acrylic paint), then lay your peacock image over your rock.  The transfer paper is between the rock and the printed image.

Secure both papers with Scotch tape and trace the peacock image with a blue or red pen so that it will be easy to see the lines that have been traced.

3.  You can use a variety of acrylic paints to add color to your rock painting.   I like to outline my transferred images with a extra fine point black Sharpie to get good definition of the lines before I start painting or coloring with my acrylic paints or markers.

4.  Using paint brushes with acrylic paints, paint pens, or permanent markers, add color to the outline of the peacock image...

I personally love using paint pens or Sharpies because it allows me to add color to small spaces with precision.   They are also available in different size tips which will make it easier to add color to larger spaces on your rock as well.

 5.  Once the ink is dry, you may want to go over any outlines with an extra fine black Sharpie pen and give it a touch up.  Seal your rock with a weather resistant acrylic sealant following the directions on the can.

ROCK PAINTING TUTORIAL #15 - Stained Glass Nativity Theme Rock

Hi and thank you for joining me to learn how to create a beautiful stained glass themed nativity rock painting. 

In the directions outlined below on this page, I will show you how to take a stained-glass themed picture of a nativity scene and transfer it onto a rock.  After it's been transferred, you can use acrylic paint pens, acrylic paints, or Sharpies to add color to it to create a one of a kind piece of art.

To make a rock the one pictured above, like this you will need the following... (click on underlined link below to learn more)...

A smooth rock

White Acrylic Paint

Paint Brush

Stained Glass Themed Angel

Transfer Paper - Graphite 

Pen

Sharpies

Black Fine Point Sharpie

Arteza Watercolor Paint Pens (optional)

Sealant

Stained Glass Nativity Themed Rock

DIRECTIONS: 

1.  Before you begin transferring the image, prepare your rock by painting it with a base coat of white acrylic paint two or three times, letting it dry in between coats.

2.  Next, you will need to find a picture to transfer onto a rock by using the following method here...  Use a search engine like PINTEREST or Google and search for terms like 'stained glass nativity scene' or 'stained glass nativity'.  Hit 'Enter'.  Your results should look something like this...

After you get the results, look directly under the search box and hover over 'Images' and left click on your choice using your mouse.  You should see a variety of images of 'stained-glass nativity scenes' that you can make your selection from.  Select 'Copy image' as shown below...

3.  In another window, open up a new WORD PROCESSING document, or have one open before you begin. 

4.  I chose this one for this rock painting tutorial...

5.    Flip back into the blank Word Processing document that you have opened, and 'right click' again.  This time, select 'Paste' from the choices shown.  Your image will appear in the blank WP document and should look like this...

6.  When in the WP document, resize it by 'left clicking' on the image and grabbing the corner of the image.  Move the black outline that appears around the image back and forth with your mouse.

The image will be true to size as it appears on the screen so use that as a guide to make it the correct size for the rock you will be painting.

You can see the small circles on the corners of the image in word processing in the picture below.  Grab one of those corner circles with your mouse to change the size of the image to fit your rock...

7.  Print out your image, so that you can proceed to trace it onto your rock's surface.  It does not have to be printed in color but use the picture's colors as a guide for applying your paint or marker to the rock when you are ready.

8.   Place a piece of your graphite transfer paper on top of your rock which has been painted with several coats of white paint (make sure the white paint is dry before doing this).   Follow the directions on the box to make sure the graphite paper is facing the right way to accept the transfer.

9.  Now you can place your printed image on top of the transfer paper and secure both pieces to your rock using Scotch tape.  It's a good idea not to skip this step because the tape will keep the papers from sliding around and will give you a great result. 

10.  With a pen or pencil go over the lines directly on your image to trace it onto your rock. 

11.  After each line is covered, remove the papers to reveal the image on your rock.  Watch the videos below for more details on this process...

ROCK PAINTING TUTORIAL #14 - Stained Glass Angel Theme

In the videos below on this page, I will show you how to take a stained-glass themed picture of an angel and transfer it onto a rock.  After it's been transferred, you can use acrylic paint pens to color it.

To make a rock like this you will need the following... 

A smooth rock

Stained Glass Themed Angel Rock

6.  Flip back into the blank Word Processing document, and 'right click' again.  This time, select 'Paste'.  Your image will appear in the blank WP document.

7.  Resize it by clicking on the image and moving the black outline that appears around the image back and forth with your mouse.  The image will be true to size as it appears on the screen so use that as a guide to make it the correct size for the rock you will be painting.
